datacenter container

A self-contained module that includes a series of rack-mounted servers along with its own lighting, air conditioning, humidification and UPS system. Designed to be transported in a shipping container and deployed intact, it enables a complete datacenter to be installed in a fraction of the normal time, and it can redeployed just as easily. Only electrical and network hookup are required. See datacenter in a box.

Sun's Virtual Datacenter
In 2008, Sun introduced its Modular Datacenter S20. Holding as many as 250 servers in a highly efficient, 20x8' climate controlled module, the unit is shipped and installed intact. (Image courtesy of Sun Microsystems, Inc.)

datacenter in a box

A complete server operation in a single product. A datacenter in a box provides a "platform as a service" (PaaS) rolled up into one package. It includes all necessary CPU, storage, networking and system software (OS, databases, etc.) fully installed and ready to go. In nearly all cases, a datacenter in a box offers a virtualized server environment, which enables workloads to be added, duplicated and deleted in real time. See virtualization and PaaS.

Cloud in a Box
A "cloud in a box" is a datacenter in a box that lets users or customers interact with cloud computing resources (see cloud computing). See datacenter container, intercloud and in a box.
