Definition: IPAM


(IP Address Management) The administration of DNS and DHCP, which are the services that assign and resolve IP addresses to machines in a TCP/IP network. There are numerous graphical-based IPAM applications that take the tedium out of manually writing DNS records and configuring DHCP settings in multiple servers.

From IPv4 to IPv6
As the world migrates from the earlier Version 4 IP addressing scheme (IPv4) to Version 6 (IPv6), which provides more address space, IPAM tools have become increasingly important. See DNS, DHCP and IPv6.
