iPad models named for their light weight. Introduced in 2013, Air models had the same screen size and resolution as previous iPads but were thinner and lighter. In 2014, a barometer and Touch ID fingerprint sensor were included.
A Four-Year Hiatus
As regular iPads became lighter, Air models were discontinued in 2015 but were resurrected in 2019. In 2022, the 5th generation bumped the camera to 12MP and Wi-Fi to 802.11ax. It was the first Air model to use Apple's new M1 chip. See
