Definition: Microsoft VDI


(Microsoft Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) A family of desktop virtualization products from Microsoft that include the following components, introduced with Windows Server 2008 R2 in 2009.

In-Box - Virtualization Host
Microsoft In-Box VDI refers to the VDI components included in Windows Server, namely the Hyper-V virtual machine monitor that hosts each user's personal virtual desktop (PVD) in its own virtual machine (VM) on the server. Each VM runs its own OS, or optionally, multiple VMs can share the OS. It also includes load balancing and Web page access.

Standard Suite - App-V and Utilities
Microsoft VDI Standard Suite includes App-V application virtualization along with System Center Virtual Machine Manager, System Center Operations Manager and System Center Configuration Manager for managing the VDI environment.

Premium Suite - Remote Desktop Services
Microsoft VDI Premium Suite adds Remote Desktop Services (RDS) functions (formerly Terminal Services), including application streaming (see App-V). See desktop virtualization, virtual machine, VDI, Terminal Services and Hyper-V.
