Definition: saser

(1) (Sound Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation) Using the "stimulated emission" principles of a laser, a saser is a sonic laser, or acoustic laser, that emits coherent sound waves in the terahertz frequency range (nanometer wavelengths). Proposed applications are in the fields of security, medical imaging and flaw detection in microscopic circuits.

Prototyped in 2009, research began in 2006 at the University of Nottingham, England, with collaboration from the Lashkarev Institute of Semiconductor Physics, Ukraine. See laser.

(2) (SASER) (Safe And Secure European Routing) Also known as Secure Communications for Europe, SASER is a CELTIC-NEXT flagship project to fortify Internet communications for the European continent. In 2014, SASER was funded by German, French and Finnish governments, and partners include the telecom companies and network operators, component manufacturers, research institutes and European universities.
