Definition: SQLite

A widely used public domain, compact, relational database engine developed for the U.S. Navy by D. Richard Hipp of General Dynamics in 2000. The design goal was a database engine for embedded systems without the overhead of a full-blown database management system (DBMS). Based on SQL and pronounced "see-quill-Lite," SQLite is linked into the software application, which makes direct programming calls to SQLite functions.

Viewing an SQLite database outside of the application requires a third-party SQLite browser utility.

SQLite is extremely popular for embedded systems. It is also used by operating systems, Web browsers and countless mobile applications. See database engine, DBMS.
