Definition: tabbed browsing

The function in a Web browser that creates multiple browsing sessions within the same browser window. Each time a website is retrieved it is represented by a tab across the top or side of the browser, allowing users to jump from website to website by clicking the tab. All pages visited within a website are available within that website's tab.

The Multiple Window Option
At any time, a user can grab a tab and drag it away from the tab bar, duplicating the entire browser window elsewhere on screen. Users with large or dual monitors may display two or more browser windows, each with any number of open tabs. See browser and dual monitor.

Tabbed Browsing in Firefox
The arrows point to the tabs that were created by pressing Ctrl-T (Windows) or Command-T (Mac) or by clicking the plus sign icon on the right side of the tab bar.
