A CDE Definition
(.Desktop Services_Store) A Mac OS X file that is created by Finder in every folder to hold the user's folder view preferences. This file is hidden in the Mac, but visible in non-Mac computers. For example, if Finder is used to copy a file from a Mac to a Windows machine, the .DS_Store is created in the Windows machine. Prior to Leopard Version 10.5, the .DS_Store file held additional meta-data such as Spotlight comments. See DESKTOP.INI.
(DESKTOP.INItialization) A hidden file that Windows creates and stores in the folder if the user customizes the folder's appearance such as changing its icon or optimization setting for indexing its files. See .DS_Store.
