A CDE Definition
A protective, clear glass used to cover the screens of smartphones and other devices from Corning Incorporated, Corning, NY (www.corning.com). Originally developed in the 1960s, the glass is relatively scratch proof even after prolonged use, and it is extremely durable. Corning's Project Phire is expected to develop a sapphire version of Gorilla Glass that is more scratch resistant. See sapphire glass.
A protective, clear glass made from aluminum-oxide powder. More scratch resistant than Gorilla Glass, sapphire glass has been used on camera lenses, expensive watches and, for years, on the screens of Vertu's handmade phones. Starting with the iPhone 6, it is also used to cover the phone's camera lens and fingerprint scanner (home button). See Gorilla Glass.
