A CDE Definition
Neighbornode
A Wi-Fi hotspot for neighborhoods. Developed by John Geraci in 2004, it enhances a Wi-Fi hotspot that is open to the public by providing a community bulletin board for the area. When users log in, they are immediately directed to the local bulletin board Web page. The creation of a Neighbornode requires a firmware update in the wireless router that is downloaded from the developer at www.neighbornode.net. See captive portal.
captive portal
A default Web page that is downloaded to everyone who logs onto the Internet. Typically used for Wi-Fi hotspots, a captive portal can be used for authorization purposes or as a community bulletin board. See Neighbornode.
