A CDE Definition
(Northgate Computers, Inc., Eden Prairie, MN) A PC manufacturer founded in 1987 by Arthur Lazere that was known for its quality systems and keyboards. Its PCs were sold through direct marketing, and its highly praised line of OmniKey keyboards was also sold through dealers. Northgate closed its doors 10 years after it began, but its keyboards were available from different sources for a while, and with some enhancements, later offered by a different company. See Avant Stellar keyboard.
Avant Stellar keyboard
An earlier, high-quality and innovative PC keyboard from Creative Vision Technologies. The successor to the popular OmniKey keyboards developed by Northgate Computers, Avant Stellars used individual switches underneath each key, providing an exceptional feel that is missing on most keyboards. Its unique layout put the function keys on the side with a duplicate row on top set to Shift+Function (see below). All the keys were programmable.
Although no longer made, there is a used market for both Northgate and Avant Stellar keyboards, and the thousands of people who still use them daily can have them refurbished at Northgate Keyboard Repair (www.northgate-keyboard-repair.com). See mechanical keyboard, premium keyboard, PC keyboard and keyboard.
