PHS

(1) (Personal Handyphone System) A TDMA-based cellular phone system introduced in Japan in mid-1995. Operating in the 1880-1930 MHz band, PHS uses microcells that cover an area only 100 to 500 meters in diameter, resulting in lower equipment costs but requiring more base stations. Using the PHS Internet Access Forum Standard (PIAFS), PHS provides up to 64 Kbps of data transfer. Although PHS was touted as a global standard, it never took off outside of Japan. See PHS-WLL and PDC.

(2) (Public Health Service) See healthcare IT.
