Redirected from: Save command

Definition: Save As

A command in the File menu of most applications that causes a copy of the current document or image to be created. It differs from the regular Save command, which stores the data back to the file and folder it originally came from. "Save As" lets the user make a copy of the file in a different folder or make a copy with a different name.

Export with Save As
In many applications, the Save As option is the way to save the data to a different file format, which is called "exporting." If the Save As dialog box offers several file types, it is providing the conversion to those formats. For example, in a graphics program, the Save As dialog might have numerous graphics format options (see below). See export.

Saving to Different Formats
Note all the graphics formats in this Photoshop dialog box (red arrow). The Save As function converts the image on screen into the selected file format.

Custom "Save As" Feature
People open and save files to the same folders over and over again, but instead of having to navigate the folder hierarchy, EZPlaces from GJC Software enables changing the destination folders in many applications as in this Photoshop example. Note the side of this dialog and the previous one.
