A CDE Definition

You'll love The Computer Desktop Encyclopedia (CDE) for Tech Term of the Day (TTOD)

(Uniform Resource Identifier) The addressing technology for identifying resources on the Internet (or a private intranet). The component of a URI that is most widely heard of is the URL, which is the address of a Web page. However, the Web is being interconnected by its data content, not just one Web page to another, and URIs increasingly refer to data elements on the Web. See RDF and Semantic Web.

In technical documentation from the standards committees, URI is the preferred term and may be used along with its application protocol such as HTTP. Thus, an "HTTP URI" is a URL used to access a Web server (see URI scheme). See URL and URN.
