USB On-The-Go

(USB On-The-Go) An enhancement to the Universal Serial Bus (USB) that enables portable devices to be cabled directly together (no computer required). OTG devices operate in "dual-role" mode and can be identified as either a host or a peripheral. When cabled to each other, an automatic negotiation makes one the host and the other a peripheral. Fully compliant as of USB 2.0, OTG devices began to ship in 2002.

Connected Via USB OTG
Used to detect objects behind walls, this Walabot 3D scanner (bottom) acts like a peripheral device to an Android smartphone. The Walabot app operates the scanner, which gets its power from the phone. Android phones use the standard 5-pin Micro USB connection, while OTG devices with 10 pin jacks accept Micro USB 3.0 plugs (see Micro USB). For OTG devices that connect to Apple products, Lightning-to-Micro USB adapters are available.
