A CDE Definition
W1 processor
The electronics that power Apple's AirPod earbuds, introduced with the iPhone 7. See iPhone 7.
iPhone 7
The previous model of the iPhone, introduced in September 2016. Like its 6s/6s Plus predecessors, a 4.7" iPhone 7 and 5.5" iPhone 7 Plus are offered. Water resistant for the first time, the line features an enhanced 12 megapixel camera with optical image stabilization. The 7 has a 5x digital zoom, while the 7 Plus has two fixed optical settings and a 10x digital zoom. The Plus also automatically switches between separate wide angle and regular lenses (although Apple calls the latter a telephoto lens). Storage starts at 32GB rather than 16, and the 7 series inaugurates iOS 10 and Apple's A10 CPU, which has two energy-efficient and two high-performance cores.
A Push for Wireless
Stereo speakers were added, but the iPhone 7 eliminated the analog headphone jack, a staple on cellphones for decades. However, Apple's corded EarPods with a Lightning connector are included, as well as a Lightning-to-headphone jack adapter for third-party corded headphones. Of course, any Bluetooth headset or headphones can be used. Apple also introduced its own wireless earbuds (see AirPods). See iOS versions, Apple A series, iPhone X and iPhone 8.
Lightning to 3.5mm Analog Headphone Jack
Starting with the iPhone 7, an adapter is included that enables a traditional headphone cable to plug in via the Lightning connector.
