A CDE Definition
WinInet
(WINdows INternET API) A Microsoft programming interface for Windows that provides access to the HTTP, FTP and Gopher protocols. It enables Windows programs to be written as clients to Web servers over the Internet or on an intranet. The server counterpart is ISAPI, which is specific to Microsoft's IIS Web server. See ISAPI.
ISAPI
(Internet Server API) A programming interface on Internet Information Services (IIS), Microsoft's Web server. Using ISAPI function calls, Web pages can invoke programs that are written as DLLs on the server, typically to access data in a database. IIS comes with a DLL that allows embedded queries to access ODBC-compliant databases. ISAPI is an alternative to using CGI scripts on Microsoft Web servers. The counterpart to ISAPI on the client side is WinInet. See WinInet.
Server-side Processing
This illustration shows the various methods used to deploy server-side processing. ISAPI applications are only one technique used in Web servers.
