Definition: aperture grille

The technology used for illuminating phosphors in Sony's earlier Trinitron CRT monitors. The aperture grille results were especially valued in desktop publishing and graphic design circles for its color purity, color saturation and brightness levels. Sony phased out its 17" and 19" Trinitron displays in 2003, maintaining only the larger CRT screen models as the company moved toward LCD panels. See slot mask.
