A CDE Definition
Unwanted lines (bands) in digital images. There are several causes, including the failure of algorithms to convert images correctly, the flickering of flurorescent lights when photos are taken and poor video conversion by the TV or disc player in real time. When taking photos of a TV or monitor, banding occurs when the frame rates of the screen and camera differ. See antibanding.
A camera setting that prevents the appearance of vertical or horizontal lines (banding) when photographing images on TV and monitor screens. Antibanding may be automatic or have manual settings for 50 Hz and 60 Hz to ensure the frame rate is the same as the country's electrical grid. See banding.
