Definition: command prompt

The symbol displayed on a command line that indicates it is ready for user input. For example, in a Windows or DOS command line, c:\budget> would be the command prompt when the current drive is C: and the current folder is BUDGET. See cmd abc's and command line.

The Mac Command Prompt
The root prompt x:~ alan$ says x is the computer name, and alan is the username. The command cd 8 changes the directory (folder) to 8. The one-character "c" and "8" names mean less typing for programmers who use the command line frequently.
