Definition: copy data management

The centralized control of the data generated by the applications in the company. Copy data management (CDM) captures all production data at their many sources and manages a single copy of everything in one global data pool. After the initial data are stored, only incremental changes are saved. Also called "copy data virtualization" (CDV), CDM eliminates redundancies and provides a single management console for setting copy frequency and retention time for all the types of data. Boston-based Actifio was the pioneer in this field. See copy data.
