device dependent

Software that addresses specific hardware features and works with only one type of peripheral device. Contrast with device independent. See machine dependent.

machine dependent

Applications that run in only one series of computers such as Intel x86 or IBM's System z mainframe. Also called "hardware dependent" and "platform dependent.

Not Dependent
In contrast, "machine," "hardware" or "platform independent" means that the application can run in a variety of different families of computers. See platform dependent and device dependent.
