A fundamental and downright essential app on a smartphone is the flashlight. There are free flashlight apps for all platforms, and it is often the first app downloaded to a new phone. From the time phones began to use LEDs for camera flash, the lighting is very adequate. See smartphone features.

Tablets are essentially smartphones with larger screens and no built-in telephone capability (although Skype and other voice-over-Internet apps are available).
