A CDE Definition
(1) Creating a high-level format on a magnetic disk drive. When a drive is being formatted, a "formatting" message appears to indicate that the operation will continue until completed and cannot be cancelled. See format program.
(2) The process of placing data into a prescribed structure. The term typically refers to an operation that is completed when the entire set of input has been processed. See format, file format and parse.
