forward compatible

Hardware or software that is compatible with subsequent versions of the product. Also called "upward compatible." When a product or interface is said to be forward compatible, it is really a statement of intent that future versions of the product will be designed to be backward compatible with this one. See backward compatible.



backward compatible

Hardware or software that is compatible with earlier versions of the product. Also called "downward compatible." Contrast with forward compatible.
