The currently highlighted menu item. A selection is made by moving the bar to the desired item and pressing Enter or clicking the mouse. The highlight is a different shade or color on color screens and reverse video on monochrome screens. See highlight.


To select an item in a menu, on the desktop or within an application in order to copy, move, delete, mark or launch it. Highlighting is typically accomplished by pointing to the object with the mouse and clicking the left mouse button. See Win Highlighting items and highlight bar.

The color and shading of highlighted items depends on the OS: Windows XP (top), Windows 7 (middle) and Mac (bottom).
