unified threat management

See UTM.

(1) (Universal Transverse Mercator) A two-dimensional system of identifying locations on the earth's surface. Unlike the longitude/latitude system, whereby a degree of longitude and latitude is only the same at the equator, the distance relationships in UTM are always uniform no matter where they are on the earth's surface. See georeferencing.

(2) (Unified Threat Management) A stand-alone appliance or software that combines a firewall, antivirus, spam and content filtering as well as intrusion detection. See firewall, antivirus, antispam and IDS.

A UTM Appliance
Sophos XG firewall/UTM appliances can replace the router in many instances. This XG 750 model provides 140 Gbps of throughput and optical support (see SFP), and it interacts with the Sophos antivirus software in the users' machines. (Image courtesy of Sophos Ltd.,
