A CDE Definition
visual sensor network
A network of wired or wireless video cameras distributed throughout a building or outdoor area that provides a continuous surveillance of the environment. A visual sensor network (VSN) presents a coherent picture of the environment to the user rather than just a collection of individual video clips. Preprocessing often takes place within the "smart" cameras before sending the data to a central computer that performs additional processing. See computer vision.
Using a computer to capture and analyze images. Also called "machine vision" (MV), there are numerous applications of computer vision, including robotic systems that sense their environment, people detection in surveillance systems, object inspection on an assembly line, image database organization and medical scans. See video content analytics and gesture recognition.
