voice grade

The bandwidth required to transmit human voice, which is about 4,000 Hertz (4 kHz). The term may refer to an analog telephone line, but also to a digital line that supports the digital equivalent of voice (see DS0). Depending on the context of usage, the term may refer to a channel that is a step up or a step down from another type.


A single 64 Kbps channel, which is the building block of a T1 transmission line. Designed for digital voice (PCM), 24 DS0 channels make up one T1 line. See DS and PCM.
